The best web hosting service to build your dream website

The best web hosting service to build your dream website

There are thousands of web hosting providers. Some hosting companies run their own data center. Others rent virtual machines from cloud service providers. All provide a way for their customers to appear online.

However, choosing the right web hosting service for you can be quite a challenge. While you don't need to be a programmer or an IT professional to properly set up a web presence, you do need to understand marketing to help get your message across.

We've highlighted four classes of web hosting services, from providers who provide a quick and easy way to build your website, to large companies that provide full data center infrastructure capabilities as a service.

dreamhost

Nick Farnborough, co-founder of Clavis Social, told ZDNET that he "has tried just about every host out there over the years and ultimately found DreamHost to be the best overall plan considering cost, performance, and ease of use." DreamHost's easy-to-use interface, efficiency and customer support stand out for business owners like Farnborough. "Whenever we encountered an issue with the site the support team was quick to respond and excellent at resolving issues," said Farnborough. "I can't say the same about many other providers."

DreamHost has WordPress hosting services, shared hosting, virtual private servers, dedicated servers, and cloud hosting. "In terms of shared hosting, DreamHost is the most cost-effective web host available," said Kenny Kline, president and financial lead at BarBend. "People trust DreamHost because they offer fast websites for a fair price on transparent terms."

We especially like the fact that DreamHost offers G Suite integration, with domain integration and Google Cloud support. The company also provides a number of resources and guides that can help customers grow their business.

GreenGeeks

The word "green" in the name of this company reflects GreenGeeks' commitment to the environment. They buy three times the energy they actually use in wind energy credits, effectively putting energy back into the economy. The company does this through a form of renewable energy certificates, which, while complex, mean that they're not just energy neutral – they actually help drive a green energy economy.

Surprisingly, the low-priced account provides SSH access and WP-CLI, along with pre-installed Git. It is also possible to customize PHP and PHP.INI, something that is quite rare in low-priced plans.

Hostinger

Hostinger is a traditional web hosting service provider. You can use WordPress or configure a piece of shared server or virtual private server with various web applications.

hPanel is an easy-to-use control center on Hostinger through which you can automatically install WordPress or other content management systems (CMS). "From the hPanel, you can manage multiple tasks, such as updating WordPress core, enabling or disabling plugins, and enabling maintenance mode," Abdul Saboor, full-stack developer at The Stock Dork, told ZDNET. "A navigation icon allows one-click access to the WordPress dashboard."

Hostinger announces a partnership with Monrax - a Linux web hosting service. This partnership includes customized performance automation and expedited ticketing solutions via site cleaning services.

Bluehost

Bluehost falls into the category of what we call "standard" hosting providers because it offers a wide range of services, from basic shared hosting to virtual private servers and dedicated machines. We place it in the category of the WordPress ecosystem because Bluehost focuses heavily on WordPress in its offerings.

We especially like how this hosting service divides their WordPress offering, from a basic shared hosting offering to a high-performance pro plan, and then a WooCommerce-based shopping cart solution. All solutions come with a specific level of backup, Office 365 mailbox, and malware detection and removal. We also like the staging environment offered by Bluehost, which lets you test your site and changes before they go public.

"In my experience, Bluehost provides the best web hosting services," Henry Waddilove, principal director of Novus Business Connections, told ZDNET.

GoDaddy

I covered GoDaddy when I reviewed email hosting providers, and here they are again in the web hosting provider space. GoDaddy has made it their business to offer as many services as possible to individuals and small businesses that need an Internet presence.

While most of my experience with GoDaddy over a decade has been with domain registration, I have come to appreciate how this web host provides the key services most customers want. They certainly aren't the best at everything, but they do a good job with almost anything. Fair prices, reasonable customer service, and while it's not 24/7, if you need technical assistance getting something done, you can usually find someone in the know (after going through a few hoops, of course).
