9 Web Hosting Tips You Should Know (Before You Pay)
A good hosting service is essential for any website. They are the foundation of your website, your brand, and your business. Any time a server goes down can be potentially detrimental and destroy everything you've built over the years. If you are serious about your website, you need to make sure they are in the right hands.
Choosing between web hosting companies nowadays is difficult, especially since we are always inundated with tempting promotions offered by web hosting companies.
If you're looking for a web hosting account, here's an article we think you might want to take a look at before getting carried away by tempting promotions and marketing tricks.
Here are some guidelines to make you a smarter consumer when choosing your web hosting account.
1. Tricks "Free Domain"
A free domain certainly sounds good, but there are a few things you need to consider before agreeing to the free domain offer:
Who owns the domain? The domain is free, but the hosting company retains ownership. What does that mean? You are either tied to the company forever or you need to pay a large sum to buy back the domain.
What about the next few years of extension? The first year is free, but when you want to extend it, they will charge $19.95+ for renewal. That's like a 200% markup on the average cost of a domain name.
It is better to ask during the research process to find out who will own the domain and also make sure the standard renewal fee is acceptable.
2. Separate Domain and Hosting
Domain names do not have to be registered with the same company. Don't get me wrong; we're not saying that your current web hosting provider can't be trusted; it's more about finding a reliable and trusted registrar in the first place.
After all, a domain name is your online identity, your most valuable and irreplaceable asset, while a hosting service exists only to accommodate a website.
You may argue for reasons of convenience. Of course, web hosting companies prefer to have your domain registered with them, as that is another lucrative source of income for them.
However, it will not be very convenient if the web hosting company decides to stop along with your domain.
3. Read Bandwidth and Disk space terms
Bandwidth and disk space are terms that are often overlooked by people looking for shared web hosting.
You have to ask yourself, "What if my website is suddenly popular and attracts thousands or millions of visitors? Will I be charged a large fee for a large data transfer?"
Of course, most websites will not exceed their bandwidth quota with just a high level of traffic, but if you provide some files for download on your website, it can happen.
4. The Trap Of Unlimited Storage
Unlimited storage sounds like a lucrative offer, doesn't it? That's what some web hosting services want you to think. However, there is no such thing as "unlimited storage".
Have you actually read carefully the TOS (terms and Conditions) of your web hosting service? If you're like most people, you'll scan it and not read it carefully. Somewhere in those TOS, there is a section that mentions CPU/Server usage.
In essence, if your website uses more than a certain amount of storage, it violates the TOS and may result in termination of Service. Of course, almost every hosting service needs to have such a thing in their terms and conditions to protect the resources on their servers from undue use.
However, many web hosting services use CPU/Server usage to circumvent their promises of unlimited storage
5. Research and discover more about them
One common way is to enter the following query "web_hosting_company sucks" and see the results returned. You'd be surprised at the number of consumers complaining about their web providers.
This list may give you an idea, but you shouldn't take it as a certainty because:
An unfair count. Large companies tend to disappoint more people because they have more dissatisfied customers, even though they may only make up a very small percentage of the total customer base.
Partiality and subjective assessment. Statements on personal blogs can sometimes be very subjective, one-sided, and affected. The rejection could have been removed by the site owner to give the impression of being one-sided.
Complaints are common. It is easier for some people to complain than to praise. In general, if a web provider is running smoothly, they are just doing their job, and if not, then deserve bad reviews. That's what we do :)
6. Buy & Save with commission rebates or coupons
In online businesses such as web hosting services, where companies are prepared to pay a year of revenue for a single customer, it may not be wise to shop around without looking for commission rebates or coupons.
Of course, you will find many hosting providers that do not provide coupons or even do not have affiliate programs, but that does not mean they are not good hosting providers.
7. Make Your Own Backup
The following question has probably already crossed your mind – Should we trust and rely on our hosting provider to back up our files? Of course not. Although hosting providers need to do backups regularly, it is not wise not to do backups off-site.
8. Use a credit card or PayPal One Time Use
Always use PayPal for transactions if you are not American, and PayPal is the only US dollar you have. It may be impractical, slow, and expensive to ask your local bank to do the conversion.
If you have no choice but to use your credit card, make sure the company is reputable to avoid an unpleasant experience.
9. Avoid long-term contracts unless you trust them
We have seen how companies give unreasonable discounts if paying two years in advance. Unless the web provider has an excellent record, consider twice.
